This blog post was written by Morgan Lowe, a Volunteer Director who traveled to Nicaragua with Color My World in 2016 and will be with us during our 2018 trips as our Registered Nurse. She helps with fundraising as well and last month raised over $1100 at a fundraiser with Chipotle so we asked her to share her experience!

“As I was sitting in a local Chipotle franchise a few months ago, I saw a flyer that caught my eye about fundraisers with Chipotle. Now, normally, if ones goes into a fast food establishment and sees a fundraiser, it is most likely for an elementary school or high school sports team. I decided to take the flyer and when I got home looked into the requirements a bit more in-depth. What I found was that Color My World qualified for most of these fundraisers that I have seen. So, I decided to start the application process and see what happened. From the information I found, 50% of the sales from CMW supporters would be given to CMW after the fundraiser. I was able to pick the location, time, and date and Chipotle even provided me with these great flyers!

So, about 2 weeks before the scheduled event, I created a Facebook event and started sharing and publicizing the night like crazy. I called the event “Chipotle for Charity” and went to town. I picked this night because the Provo location of Chipotle gets a lot of traffic and Monday nights in Utah are big family nights as well as it being a holiday, I expected a good turnout.

I had gotten a corporate email a few weeks before the event saying that we were not permitted to hand out flyers at the location during the event which would have greatly increased our donation. So, I decided to call the manager, Luis, and talk with him about it. He was more than welcome to let us come in to answer questions during the night and promote the fundraiser.

So, the day of the fundraiser came. I printed flyers and picked up cookies for all the Chipotle staff. Having worked in the food industry and just retail in general, I know that cookies and acknowledging what these employees were doing that night would make them more apt to be on our side and help promote the fundraiser.

It started at 4 pm and by 5 pm, the manager had come outside and told me that he was going to count the entire night’s sales toward the fundraiser and that I didn’t need to stay outside. He felt bad I was out in the cold but could see it was something I was passionate about, so he bought me dinner and told me to come inside. Major props go to Luis because he was definitely the Hero of the Day.

The fundraiser was definitely a success and went off without a hitch. Many companies do fundraisers like this or host similar events that allow them to get tax breaks and bring in some good publicity. In 4 hours that night, we raised over $1100 for Color My World! This was a great fundraiser because it allowed people to donate while doing something they would normally do anyway- eat dinner. But if you’re having a hard time coming up with the funds to join us abroad this year, or even next, just get in contact with Morgan Lowe (me), one of our volunteer directors, and she can help you brainstorm and get all the necessary information you need to help get you on one of our trips!”

How can you apply to have a fundraiser at a Chipotle near you!

When filling out the application you will need this EIN 20-1831524 and our new address 12231 Joshua Tree Trail, Windermere FL 34786 to register.

This is a great way you raise money for your trip with us this summer!

Last year, we delivered 49 baskets to Blessed Sacrament Church in Manchester and 4 baskets to families in need in Bedford.

You can see the power of community in the photo….it really does take a village.

Enjoy a quick story on our 2013 experience-

When I arrived at the parish, I was informed that the church’s food pantry was robbed last night, the turkeys and all of the food on the shelves were stolen.

When we arrived with the 50 baskets they informed us that YOUR donated baskets made the difference as 300 families were arriving tomorrow and they were short at least that many baskets as a result of the robbery.

She said….”It is amazing how things like this just work out……”

I nearly broke down in tears as I know it was frigid and cold for you all this weekend, many without power and some hustling back from weekend trips etc, to get a basket to us.

When I heard about the issues at the church, I was humbled by the amazing people that surround us.

Thank you ……Your baskets were like manna from heaven. – Angela Hughes

Baskets will be delivered by Blessed Sacrament Parish in Manchester, NH that do so much to help the poor and the needy.

Meet Grace Harker, Sponsor Liaison

I am a junior at Brigham Young University, studying Marketing Management and Spanish. I am originally from the Northwest in the Portland, OR area, but my studies have brought me southeast a few hundred miles and I love it! My experience with non-profit organizations began in 2012 when I traveled to Guatemala with Medical Teams International.

I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Color My World and to be able to further my experience in the non-profit field of work.

Meet Katie Spencer!

Katie Spencer is seventeen years old and in her senior year of high school. In her free time, Katie likes to work on her singing skills, be with her friends, and spend time with her family. Before getting a part time job, she also enjoyed being a part of the theater company at Bedford High School.

Katie was able to join us in Nicaragua this summer and learned a lot about the people and culture there. She loved seeing the happiness and gratitude in the eyes of those we helped and would go back in a heartbeat. She is excited to be working with Color My World once again and help out the people near her home.

It was hot, it was humid, and it was hard work, but I wouldn’t change going to Nicaragua for anything in the world. Spending a week serving people every day really opens your eyes to a new way of life. It makes you so happy to know what you are doing for these people and you almost forget about the heat and your fatigue because you want to help them so bad.

Going to Nicaragua made me realize that here in the United States we live in a bubble. We may see stuff about poverty and problems in other countries on the news, or learn about it in school, but you can never truly understand it until you are completely surrounded by it.

OKLAHOMA TORNADO DISASTER RELIEF

The woman’s Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in conjunction with the Young Woman’s Organization and the boys of Scout troop 650, Wolfeboro, held a working party on June 4 to put together hygiene kits to be delivered to the victims of the recent Oklahoma tornadoes. 55 kits were constructed containing soap, toothbrush tooth paste, combs, and hand towels. All the materials were donated by church members, friends and local businesses. Once assembled the kits were forwarded directly to the afflicted people in Oklahoma.

ARLINGTON – St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington hosted the awards ceremony for the Arlington Girl Scout troops on Sept. 16.

Claire Grupe and Emma Sheldon were bridged from Daisies to Brownies, and Audrianna Ennis flew up from Brownies to become a Junior Girl Scout.

The Juniors who were bridged to Cadettes were Angela Caggiano, Anna Freebern, Florrie Hynds, Kierstyn Hess and Alyssa Harrington. They were welcomed by current Cadettes, Sofie Pedemonti, Katheryn Berger and Kaleigh Ward. The girls were presented with badges by troop leaders Janne Pedemonti, Elizabeth Berger, and Amanda Harrington, that they had earned over the past year. A special recognition was also given to parent volunteers; Elizabeth Berger, Kim Baker, Rose Caggiano, Julie Freebern, Stephanie Hynds-Moffett, and Janinie Moscarelllo.

The Arlington Girl Scouts recently organized a collection of hygiene kits for victims of Hurricane Sandy in conjunction with "Color My World" of
Cynthia Browning, a local state representative, was also recognized for her work with the Girl Scouts growing vegetables in the community garden in Arlington over the summer that were harvested for the food shelf and local schools.

The girls who bridged to Cadettes were each presented with the Bronze Award, the highest award given to a Junior. This distinction required that the girls develop an ambitious leadership project that would impact their community. Florrie Hynds and Angela Caggiano focused their efforts on pollution and recycling.

They did a workshop with Don Knaak of Junkmusic to use bottles caps and other objects to create musical instruments. They also made a wind chime, played games, created refrigerator magnets and stamps using bottle caps.

Florrie and Angela were also able to get the children at Happy Days Daycare in Arlington involved with playing games while learning about recycling. A petition of 75 signatures were collected and sent to the three top bottling companies; Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestle, asking them to consider making their caps out of compostable material. The girls were able to raise the awareness of the importance of recycling in their community and were able learn a lot about it themselves.

Alyssa Harrington, Kierstyn Hess and Anna Freebern chose to create a gardening project at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation (CLR) in Bennington. The girls worked with the local Garden Club gaining knowledge about planting for their project. At CLR, they cleaned and prepared garden beds, planted bushes and herbs. A butterfly and hummingbird garden was created for the enjoyment of the residents.

The girls gave a presentation on nutrition and explained the different parts of a flower. They created garden themed projects and celebrated the end of summer harvest with a garden party complete with a garden themed food, music, games and decorations. They were able to make a connection with the residents of CLR, fostered a relationship with the Garden Club and gained a great amount of knowledge about gardening.

The Arlington Girls Scouts also recently organized a collection of hygiene kits containing basic hygiene items. The girls coordinated their efforts with an organization by the name of Color My World in Bedford, N.H. more than 50 plus kits were collected and shipped to the hard hit areas on the East Coast that were effected by Hurricane Sandy.

The Girl Scouts would like to thank all that donated to this important cause.

By KIMBERLY HOUGHTON
Union Leader Correspondent

Hundreds of miles away from the major destruction in New York City and along the New Jersey shoreline, a local nonprofit organization is spearheading a nationwide humanitarian effort to collect as many hygiene kits as possible to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

“I think people are getting desperate,” said Angela Hughes of Color My World Foundation of Bedford.

Hughes is returning from New York City today, where she spent the past two days witnessing the heartache that mother nature has bestowed on the lively urban community.

Hughes joined her husband on a business trip and said she is in awe of the crippling impact that Hurricane Sandy has had on New York, especially lower Manhattan.

On Thursday, officials enforced a ban on driving into Manhattan without at least three people in each vehicle, according to Hughes, who said her 12-year-old son joined them on the trip to help meet the mandatory quota.

“We had no problem getting into the city, as there is not a lot of traffic here. There are a lot of people walking,” she said by telephone, explaining the mayor is encouraging motorists to assist those individuals who are walking.

While she was staying in midtown Manhattan, as opposed to lower Manhattan which has seen the brunt of the storm, Hughes said it is still an unusual site.

“Twenty blocks down from here, people are desperately trying to get water and gas. It is like there are two different New Yorks – one side that has power and the other side that is in the dark,” said Hughes. “Once you get to 39th Street, it goes black.”

Noah Hughes checking out the destruction of the hurricane at Central Park

While some of the subway system is operating, Hughes said Central Park is closed and shelters are being organized every few blocks.

“More things are moving today, and we are mostly seeing a lot of international people, and a ton of marathoners,” she said Friday, adding that in the past 24 hours there have been numerous stations set up with batteries and water.

Gasoline has obviously been the biggest obstacle for New York City residents, according to Hughes, who said people are getting frustrated and desperate.

Many people living in lower Manhattan and certain areas of New Jersey are in need of basic supplies, including toothbrushes, soap and towels, as they have been displaced or lost their homes, said Hughes.

Color My World, a non-profit youth foundation in Bedford, is encouraging New Hampshire residents – and others throughout the country – to donate hygiene kits to families affected by Hurricane Sandy.

While its initial goal was to collect 500 kits, Hughes said she would like to top 1,000.

“Each kit helps a family of four, so that would be like helping 4,000 people who need our assistance,” she explained.

Hughes’ son, Noah, is taking the lead in this worthwhile project, and is optimistic that Granite State citizens will take the time out of their busy lives to think about the survivors of this tragedy not too far from home.

“It is just really amazing what Sandy has done. It is just so sad,” said Noah, a sixth-grader who is home-schooled.

Watching the famous crane dangle from high atop a Manhattan construction site – a scene that has received a lot of publicity since the storm hit – Noah said it is hard to imagine how workers will be able to remove the crane, or even how the massive city will recover.

But New Yorkers are strong, and they will survive, he said, especially with a little help from their neighbors to the north.

Color My World is accepting part or complete hygiene kits consisting of: four toothbrushes, two bars of soap, two hand towels, one tube of toothpaste and two combs packed in a one-gallon zip-lock bag.

Drop off locations include the Bedford Public Library, the YMCA in Goffstown, the YMCA in Manchester, Trinity High School, Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains in Bedford and Bedford Positively at the Bullock Agency, 11 Meetinghouse Road.
